Project Story

Church Growth Trust is a registered charitable trust supporting churches across England and Wales through property trusteeship, consultancy and practical guidance. Their work helps ensure church buildings continue to be used for Christian ministry for generations to come.

This has been one of the most rewarding website projects I’ve worked on.

From the very beginning, it was clear this wasn’t just another website. Church Growth Trust needed a platform that could clearly communicate their work, manage hundreds of resources, showcase available church properties and, importantly, be simple enough for their team to manage themselves.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Sharon Short at Church Growth Trust and Pete Willis from Boilerhouse Creative, who created the fantastic visual designs for the project. My job was to take Pete’s designs and turn them into a working website while engineering everything that sits behind them.

Rather than relying on an off-the-shelf theme or trying to force Church Growth Trust’s requirements into existing plugins, we custom coded the website around the designs and created a completely bespoke WordPress content management system specifically for their team.

Every part of the website has been built to be fast, responsive and straightforward to manage without requiring technical knowledge.

The result is a website that feels completely bespoke to visitors while remaining incredibly simple for the Church Growth Trust team to manage behind the scenes.

Bespoke Property Management System

One of the biggest parts of the project was developing a completely bespoke Property Management System specifically for Church Growth Trust.

Rather than trying to make an off-the-shelf property plugin fit their workflow, we built the system around the way they actually work.

The system includes:

  • Dynamic property listings
  • Individual property pages
  • Custom WordPress CMS editing fields
  • Image galleries
  • Interactive maps
  • Property information panels
  • Enquiry forms
  • Responsive layouts
  • Future-proof architecture

The Church Growth Trust team can create and manage church properties in minutes without needing to understand WordPress development or touch a line of code.

The system takes care of the rest, transforming that information into consistent, professional property listings across desktop, tablet and mobile.

It’s a good example of what bespoke development should be: the technology adapts to the organisation rather than asking the organisation to adapt to the technology.

Custom Resource Library

Church Growth Trust has built an extensive collection of guides and resources covering church property, governance, fundraising, compliance and building maintenance.

With so much valuable information available, simply presenting visitors with pages of PDF downloads wasn’t enough.

We designed and developed a completely bespoke Resource Library that makes this content much easier to browse, discover and manage.

Featured resources sit alongside supporting downloads and related information, transforming what could have been a traditional document archive into a modern knowledge hub.

Just as importantly, the underlying CMS allows the Church Growth Trust team to continue expanding the library themselves as new resources are produced.

Enterprise Website Development

Projects like this are exactly why I created Rose of the Shires. It’s not always about e-commerce websites.

Many businesses, charities and organisations need to communicate complex information while also managing properties, documents, resources or completely bespoke processes. At that point, a website becomes much more than a collection of pages.

Some organisations simply need more than a standard website.

They need bespoke systems, custom functionality and a content management system designed around the way their people actually work.

Whether that’s managing church properties, organising a large resource library or developing completely bespoke business processes, everything we build is designed around the organisation rather than forcing the organisation to adapt to generic software.

Final Thoughts

There are website projects you finish and move on from, and there are projects that genuinely mean something to you.

This has been one of those projects.

Everyone I’ve had the good fortune to speak to and collaborate with at Church Growth Trust has been incredible. There’s something particularly rewarding about knowing that the work we’ve created will support an organisation whose own work has such a lasting purpose.

But I want to give a very particular thank you to Sharon.

Sharon has effectively project led this website alongside me from the Church Growth Trust side. Her knowledge, patience, attention to detail and willingness to work through countless decisions with me have shaped this project from beginning to end.

What I’ve appreciated most is that this has never really felt like a typical client and developer relationship. It has felt like a genuine collaboration between people who simply wanted to get it right.

Sharon, your input into this website has been immeasurable. You’ve trusted me with ideas, challenged things when they needed challenging, answered endless questions and helped turn something incredibly complex into something we’re both genuinely proud of.

Thank you for trusting me to build it with you.

I also want to give a huge thank you to Pete Willis at Boilerhouse Creative. Pete produced a brilliant set of designs and has been fantastic to collaborate with throughout. Together we’ve taken those original concepts and transformed them into a modern, scalable website that Church Growth Trust can continue to build upon for many years to come.

When I look at the finished website, I’m obviously proud of the development and the systems we’ve built. But I’m probably even more proud of the way it all came together.

Good projects are rarely the work of one person. They’re the result of people bringing different skills, ideas and experience to the table and trusting each other enough to create something better together.

This is exactly the type of project I created Rose of the Shires to work on.

And it’s exactly the type of project that reminds me why I still love building things for the web.
